What type of family do you have? There are so many different variations, and it can be difficult to explain all that a family is to young children. What is a Family? A question & answer book by Tamia Sheldon is a good start to helping to answer this question. We received a copy of this e-book in exchange for our honest review.
What is a Family? uses Waldorf style illustrations with simple lines and no facial features. It is an easy-to-read story that stresses positive family connections such as spending time together and doing everyday things like gardening, cooking, dancing, and playing.
Each two-page spread contains one sentence and one question to the reader.
There are lots of examples and questions for the readers. Here is a quote from this book:
What makes a family? Lets think about what a family is. This family loves to cuddle up together and read books. What books do you like to read?
What is a Family? gets parents/carers chatting and remembering and sharing stories of their own family. Each time this story is read you can change or elaborate on some of the questions to make it memorable.
We are a ‘typical/traditional’ family of a Mother, Father, and boy and girl children. Kallista has drawn a picture of her family to share. However, my half of the extended family lives an ocean away. We use the telephone and Skype to keep in contact (as well as old-fashioned post), but it’s not the same as being a short walk or drive away. However, this does not make us any less of a family.
Not all families are like ours, and each family should be treasured. What is a Family? is a good primer for preschool/kindergarten children when they reach the age of starting to recognise that other family units may differ from their own.
