Over the past month our family have been reacquainted with Super Teacher Worksheets. We have been using them as a supplement to our eclectic curriculum. We have a one year membership to the site which contains many worksheet topics such as math, language arts, social studies, and science. For those who speak Spanish, they also have many worksheets available for you to use.
The Super Teacher Worksheet website has over 10,000 printable resources that are geared mainly towards children between kindergarten and grade 5. I would say probably most of them are towards the lower end of that scale from what I’ve seen. The one feature I haven’t been able to find yet is a way to search by grade level. Having such an option would make narrowing down options much easier and less frustrating then going into one topic only to find it doesn’t match what I’m looking for.
I have noticed, however, that the grade levels don’t quite correspond to my children’s abilities. So keep this in mind; you know the abilities of your own children so you can adjust for that. For example, Kallista is seven, which would put her in grade two and she is finding that the worksheets in the grade 1 to 3 level are not enough of a challenge for her. Here is a quote from Kallista, “I think Super Teacher Worksheets are really fun because it is really too easy for me. The division colouring page is my favourite, but also the most challenging one.”
The first thing we printed off was a division colouring worksheet for the children, the answer to each equation corresponded to a specific colour on the key. Answer the question, then colour the area in the correct colour. The next project was a fun little scarecrow which every time someone walks down the hall they put into a different position.
One of the things I do love about Super Teacher Worksheets are all of the fun extras that they have and this is where we have made the most use of it this year. School work can get a little bit dull and boring and it’s nice to liven things up both for the children and I by doing things on topic while having a little fun and creativity at the same time. This autumn our walls are more beautiful as they are filled with craft projects and colouring from Super Teacher Worksheets.
We have even taken our worksheets on the move with the children working on them while on a train to Belfast for a meeting. Printing a few off make them easy to carry and you don’t have to take an entire workbook with you.
To give us a Friday fun day last week I printed off a bird scavenger hunt for the children to do. I hid each of the cards in various locations around the house and then they spent some time searching about trying to find them. Some were very easy to find but the last one, asking about the colour of chickens eggs, they couldn’t find until snack time. They went into the fridge for some veggies and found the card with the box of eggs. They thought that was just great hilarious fun!
Some of the fun features Super Teacher Worksheets have are worksheet generators, we made full use of these with our last subscription. With these you can create your own word searches, crosswords, math worksheets, bingo games, quizzes (multiple choice, fill-in-the-blank, matching, and short answer), newsletters, and calendars. I used to send out cute newsletters when Tristan was a baby and I think I’ll now start doing that again…but have the children create them! How fun for grandparents and friends!
Now, after you have worked your way through the site, how will you keep track of the ones you’ve used or would like to do? A click of the mouse and you can save them into a ‘filing cabinet’ for future reference, which makes life much easier. I like this option. In my filing cabinet I have the worksheet for the Box Car Children as we have the book sitting on the shelf and it will be making its way into our calendar later this month.
What do we think about super teacher worksheets? It’s a good tool to have in your toolbox for those days when life hasn’t gone according to plan; when you need a little something to mix up your day or when someone, either student or teacher, isn’t feeling well. I can print off a little bundle for the week, or just a single worksheet here and there when it’s needed. That works for me.
