Exploring Textures With Toddlers

May 13, 2012 by Crystal McClean

Exploring textures with toddlers at meal timeLove it or hate it, children love to explore textures!  From fabrics to dirt to everything in between….including food!

Children learn in many different ways, and with all of their senses; visualisation, listening, smelling, tasting, and feeling.

This may not be so fun to the adult who has to clear up after lunch, but  children do a lot of learning through such exploration!

So when this happens to you, just remember that as it results in more ‘work’ for you, this is your child at ‘work’ as well, learning about what things feel like- sticky, rough, hot, cold, smooth, lumpy, slippery, etc.  They are also learning about cause and effect- what happens when I squeeze a blueberry, porridge, crisp bread…does it pop, squish, crunch?  What sound does it make when it hits the floor?  What reaction will I get from the people around me?  Does the same thing happen every time, or is something different this time?

So the next time your sweet child is full of a sticky mess,  just sit back, and watch the learning process in action…What’s la little mess in the grand scheme of learning about the world, anyway?
