Every now and again a special book comes along and I just can’t resist it! The Carousel of Animals is one such book and I just couldn’t decline when Little Gestalten asked if we’d be interested in sharing it with you!

The Carousel of Animals is a cute little 3D pop-up book by Gérard Lo Monaco. It’s a small but mighty book, and will delight youngsters with its ingenuity.
Read this book almost like a regular pop-up book. All of the text is on the first page as as you read you unfold the pages and when you’re done the covers meet back to back. Tie the ribbon to hold them together and you have a pretty carousel to hang in a baby or toddler’s room; it even comes with a handy ribbon loop at the top just for this purpose.

How fantastic does this look?!
The Carousel of Animals would be a wonderful addition to a nursery (think baby shower gift), and it would be so fun to read in a group setting such as a library rhyme time or daycare or childminder’s setting where it could hang between readings.

My daughter is 8 and she says it’s adorable, and I must agree with her, too!
My only suggestion for future editions of this book is that the back of the book pages be a bright colour so that the carousel can be more interesting as if it is hung too high or too near the observer, you end up seeing only the white underside of the pages rather than the colourful characters. But once you find just the right location, it’s wonderful! I will be placing orders of this book for baby shower gifts and birthdays.
The illustrator, Gérard Lo Monaco, is surely influenced by his Argentinian upbringing, and now his current life in France; in fact, his paper craftsmanship has won him a 2017 Grammy Award! How fascinating is that? As much as paper seems to be becoming a thing of the past, paper engineering is still very much a talent in demand.
