K is for Kabuki - A-Z of Japan

Fine arts are deeply ingrained part of the Japanese culture. While I lived in Japan I saw Bunraku, Noh, and Kabuki theatre performances. My favourite was kabuki. What is Kabuki? Smoky Corn Chowder

During the winter months, a hot, thick bowl of soup is both filling, and comforting. This smoky corn chowder with bacon is my mother's recipe, handed down to me in a family cookbook, and she has kindly given permission for me to share it. We make it year-round, but it's particularly lovely on a blistery winter's day. This smoky corn chowder is frequently requested by my children and husband. It's quick and easy to make, so we're all happy to have it. Corn Chowder Ingredients 6 ... read more

14 Things To Buy At After-Christmas Sales

Do you make after-Christmas purchases for future use, or do you just buy things as you need them at the last minute? A lot of money can be saved by being strategic with what you buy and when. Even better than Black Friday deals, are after Christmas sales for me. Growing up, my parents saved money any way they could, and having my maternal grandparents just two doors down the street, who had raised children during the Great Depression and WWII, I also learned how to save money. Since the ... read more

Cute angel from a paper doily

If you're looking for a quick and easy craft for kids, then this doily angel craft is perfect. Decorate and fill a wooden gift box

This year I'm going to be making more of these little decorated boxes filled with homemade gifts. This year in particular I'd like to show people I'm thinking about them with a personal gift. I really enjoy crafting something for someone else, and I thought I would share the process with you so you can create a bespoke gift for that someone special. I made the original box 4 years ago, but we still use this technique when when designing a wooden gift box for any occasion. Start By ... read more
